Visibility
- You said - You would like to see the police on the streets more often
- We did - We introduced dedicated neighbourhood policing teams, recruited 363 police community support officers and returned 223 police officers to frontline duties from support roles.
- Results - Over a third of you now tell us you see us on foot patrol at least once a fortnight,- a real increase from just 12% three years ago.
- Next - We are continuing to increase our presence by patrolling in the streets in key areas at key times in response to your requests to see us more.
Neighbourhood policing
- You said - You wanted to know your local policing team and you wanted to be informed about policing in your local area by leaflets, newsletters, contact cards and posters.
- We did - We developed a neighbourhood policing website with details of your local team, what they are working on and events in your area.
- Results - Over half of you now tell us you have met a member of your local neighbourhood policing team, this has increased from just 11% three years ago.
- Next - Our nighbourhood policing teams are always working on new ways to meet you and ask you what matters in your neighbourhood, you can find out what they are working on and when they are next holding an event on our website. They continue to develop newsletters and other ways to keep you informed based on your feedback.
- You said - You were concerned about speeding traffic.
- We did - We worked with you to develop community speedwatch, working with local residents and schools to reduce speeding in your neighbourhoods.
- Results - A third of you are concerned about this now compared to half of you three years ago.
- Next - We continue to develop new community speedwatch schemes where you feel they would be beneficial.
- You said - You wanted us to respond to antisocial behaviour and keep you informed on what was being done about it in your area
- We did - Our neighbourhood teams work with our partners to reduce antisocial behaviour and keep you informed as to what we are doing. You can find out the activities being undertaken in your area on our neighbourhood policing website
- Results – 80% of you are now satisfied with how we deal with antisocial behaviour compared to 58% three years ago. We have had 36,000 hits on our neighbourhood policing website
- Next - We will continue to improve our work on antisocial behaviour focusing on those issues which affect more vulnerable victims and those who have experienced more than one antisocial behaviourincident
Restorative justice
- You said - You wanted to be more involved and have a greater say in how crimes were resolved.
- We did - We have implemented a restorative justice approach. This means we respond to crimes in a way that puts victims at the centre, giving them a real say in how the matter is resolved.
- Results - So far this year we have trained all of our frontline staff and delivered victim driven solutions for 2552 crimes.
- Next - Our use of this approach is increasing all the time and we are now building upon our success with crimes committed by young people to apply it to those committed by adults.
Court & convicted
- You said - You wanted to know who committed offences and how they were punished.
- We did - We now put information, including photographs of convicted offenders on our website.
- Results - There have been 71,000 hits on these pages on our website.
- Next - We are looking to add more local information so you can see those who have committed offences in your local area.
Call handling
- You said - You wanted us to answer the telephone more quickly when you call us.
- We did – We have changed our shift patterns to ensure we have our call handlers available at times of highest demand. Our staff are focussed on getting it right first time for the customer and delivering the requirements of our policing pledge.
- Results - Your satisfaction with the ease of contacting us has consistently increased and 96% of you are now satisfied compared to 87% of you three years ago. We answer 91% of 999 calls in under 10 seconds and 92% of non emergency calls in under 30 seconds, which exceeds the standards set nationally for the police.
- Next – We will continue to monitor when you are ringing us, the length of time taken to answer calls and whether you are satisfied with the service provided, to continuously improve the standards of our service.
Keeping victims informed
- You said - You wanted more information from us and to be kept more up to date on our progress in dealing with matters.
- We did - We have committed to keeping you informed and asking how you would like to hear from us with updates. We can now see you at a booked appointment and respond to your specific needs.
- Results - We are still working hard to improve the information we give you and to ensure it is tailored to your needs in each case. 77% of you now say you are satisfied with how we keep you informed of our progress compared to 69% three years ago.
- Next - We continue to improve the way we work so you are central to our service. We will be running dedicated teams to support you whilst your investigation is underway.
Crime levels
- You said - You were worried about being a victim of crime and that burglary is a key concern for you.
- We did - We worked with you to prevent burglaries and we targeted the persistent offenders who were committing these offences.
- Results - Burglary is at a historically all time low level, with 40% less burglaries being reported this year than in 2002/3.
- Next - Despite significant falls in crime we are still working hard with our partners to reduce crime and it's impact further.
