If life is threatened, if people are injured, if offenders are nearby, if immediate action is required.

999 should not be used to report lost items, noisy neighbours or to check your plug sockets are working. These are real examples of when people have called the emergency number.

Calls to 101 cost only 15 pence from a landline or mobile phone, no matter what time of day, where you are calling from in England and Wales or how long the call lasts.
