Theft from sheds and garages

The summer months tend to be the peak time for garden thefts. Easy access into gardens and property left unatttended allows thieves to take advantage of stealing valuable equipment.

Remember…

Gardens, garages and sheds contain a number of high value items such as lawnmowers, tools, bicycles and garden furniture, which will appeal to thieves. They may also contain items like tools and ladders, which a burglar can use to break into the house

Top tips to secure your shed and garage

  • Fit strong deadlocks or padlocks to shed and garage doors. Don’t leave your garage or garden shed unlocked.
  • Secure all garden equipment after use in your garage or shed.
  • Mark & register your property - marking your property with your postcode, house number or house name makes your property traceable and deters criminals.  Register at www.immobilise.com.
  • Make sure your doors are strong and solid.
  • Install outside lighting such as low energy security lights that come on at dusk and go out at dawn.
  • Install fencing and gates around your home.
  • Grow prickly plants or hedges to deter thieves.

Did you know?

  • Properties without security measures in place, are ten times more likely to be burgled than those with simple security measures such as quality door locks.
  • Garden tools that have not been secured maybe used by thieves to gain access to your property.
  • Typical items stolen are bikes, power tools, lawnmowers, garden furniture or ornaments & sporting equipment.
  • You are much less likely to be a victim of shed or garage theft if you take the easy but effective steps on the previous pages.

Remember to lock your garage and shed!
