Below are some tips to help you be safe on public transport:

• Always plan your journey, knowing departure times and checking for changes to the schedule.
• Try to have your ticket or money at hand so you do not have your purse or wallet on show.
• If you are travelling alone, especially at night, try to stay with groups of people or arrange to be met at the end of your journey.
• When you are waiting for a bus or train, try to stand in well-lit places.
• If the bus or train is empty when you start your journey try to sit near to the driver or conductor.
• If you are going to use a taxi make sure you use a reputable company and only hail licensed hackney carriages.

Top tips to be safe when socialising

You can take a few simple steps to make sure you are safe socialising:

• Never accept a drink from someone you don't know or trust.
• Never leave a drink unattended.
• If your drink looks or tastes suspicious - don't drink it. Although rare, drinks can be tampered with, including soft drinks, tea and coffee.
• When out with your friends keep an eye out for each other.
• If you feel unusually light-headed or ill after just a few drinks, seek help from a trusted friend, or, if in a public house or club, a member of staff.

It is natural to feel more vulnerable at night, when there are fewer people around, especially when you are walking. You can take the following steps to keep safer at night:

• During darkness you are safest in well-lit and busy areas.
• Cover up expensive looking jewellery, mobile phones, or even keys, cash or cards.
• If you often walk, consider carrying a personal attack alarm.
• Always making sure someone knows your movements, schedule and the route you are taking. If your plans change, tell them.
• Planning ahead. Places and routes you use during the day can change considerably after dark.  Avoid poorly lit subways, car parks and open areas.
• If you do find yourself in trouble, the best form of defence is to get away and head towards busier areas.
• If you are trapped, bring attention to yourself, making as much noise as possible by shouting for help or for someone to contact the police.
