Domestic abuse - there's never an excuse
To coincide with the World Cup, we have launched a new domestic abuse campaign. During the 2006 tournament, we experienced a 73% increase in reports of domestic abuse during England match days.
Our campaign aims to raise awareness of the support available to victims of domestic abuse, as well as to remind perpetrators that drinking often leads to increased incidents of domestic abuse.
Detective Chief Inspector Northcott from our domestic violence unit said: “Nationally we know that the numbers of domestic violence reports increase on England match days. There is undoubtedly a link between alcohol and this rise in violence and abuse, the consequences of which are devastating for victims and their families.”
“The World Cup should be an event that everyone can enjoy and people should understand that the police will take a robust stance in dealing with any perpetrators of domestic violence and abuse.”
Our officers will use innovative techniques to combat domestic violence, including ‘head cameras’ to gather evidence as officers arrive at the scene. In addition to these measures, we are planning our resources to ensure sufficient staff are available in the hours following an England match.
When dealing with individuals for ‘public place’ violence during the World Cup, previous domestic abuse history will be taken into account before a person is released to return home.
Detective Superintendent John Clements, domestic abuse lead said: “We want to make sure that those suffering abuse behind closed doors have the confidence to come forward and are then given the support and protection they so badly need.”
“Our advice to victims would be that if you are worried that you will be more at risk during the World Cup don’t wait – contact the police or any of the victim support services that will help you. Our partner agencies will also be ensuring that there is adequate call handling and victim support.”
During the campaign, posters to target potential offenders will be displayed in police stations, licensed premises and hospitals across Devon & Cornwall. Leaflets for victims with information about support agencies will also be distributed by police officers and support agencies during the world cup competition.
