As a member of police staff you can make a real difference by helping to provide a service to the local community.

Working for the police is unlike any other job. The nature of police work means it requires a flexible, dedicated and skilled support network to run effectively and our police staff are vital to the day-to-day running of the Force.

We are one of the largest employers in the South West with over 1,500 members of police staff working in a wide range of roles across Devon and Cornwall. Scenes of crime officers, call handlers, analysts, police enquiry officers, admin staff, IT consultants, project managers and mechanics are just a few of the different jobs undertaken.

Age 

There is no upper age limit for applying to be a member of police staff.

Until 30 September 2011 the retirement age for a member of police staff is 65. However, please note that effective from 1 October 2011, a compulsory retirement age will no longer apply, unless there is a genuine occupational or health and safety reason. This legislative change will not prevent individuals from choosing to retire at 65 and accessing any occupational pension provision that they may have.

Exceptions: the retirement age for pilots will remain unchanged whilst the CAA requires the cessation of solo flying at 60. Given the nature of policing and the legislative requirements, it is anticipated that certain other roles may be exempt from the removal of the statutory retirement age where either the legislation or the professional body governing their activity stipulates a specific retirement age. This is currently under review.
