Positive action in recruitment

How we achieve 'positive action'

We have introduced a number of 'positive action' measures to ensure that we are recruiting from all of our diverse communities. An example of some of the 'positive action' measures that we have undertaken in the past year include:

Outreach initiatives

We regularly support the community by means of liaising with under-represented groups in order to promote 'positive action' within the community. Events are attended in an attempt to dismantle any barriers that exist in the way we attract and retain staff. Such events have included the Respect festivals, university career fairs, Gay Pride events and minority ethnic community festivals. We also give consideration to the way in which we publicise recruitment campaigns, and this may include advertising in specific magazines and newspapers.

Support sessions

These sessions centre on the recruitment process and provide information, encouragement and support to applicants. People from under-represented groups are offered information about the various selection processes and feedback is offered to unsuccessful applicants. Sessions are run periodically and can be held at different locations across the Force. If you wish to send an e-mail to the recruitment unit leave your details and in the message field type positive action events information please email recruitment.

Please note this e-mail is not for application forms or to be put on a waiting list for vacancies.

Buddy scheme

The ‘buddy scheme’, is still in its infancy but aims to provide individuals from under-represented groups the chance to have one-to-one support and career advice from a serving member of staff from a similar under-represented group.

We work closely with our staff support groups and may be able to offer one to one advice and support with a member from a staff group such as:

The aim of this scheme is to enable applicants to compete on a level playing field, as a result of providing confidential support and encouragement. It also serves to diminish any fears or anxieties about working for the organisation.

Holding an event?

Whilst we cannot attend all events, if you have details of any event that you think would be beneficial for us to attend, please forward details to the Recruiting Department, Police Headquarters, Middlemoor, Exeter, Devon EX2 7HQ.

Alternatively, you can telephone on 01392 452500 or email recruitment
