Preventing terrorism and extremism
Preventing people from becoming terrorists or supporting violent extremism
We recognise that the best long-term solution to preventing terrorism is to stop people from becoming terrorists in the first place.
Experience shows us that terrorists, extremist groups and their networks promote violent extremism by a variety of methods, including distorting theology, history and politics to justify their actions. It is these distorted messages that we need to recognise and have confidence to address within our society.
One very important element of preventing violent extremism is to provide support to members of our community who may be being exploited or recruited into violent extremism. This support is to help enable them to consciously resist or reject any attempts by others to exploit them and hopefully provide another path for them to choose.
How are we doing this?
We work in partnership with local authorities, other statutory partners and community groups. As well as having a responsibility for local delivery of the agenda, the partners are drawn on for local expertise around support measures for individuals who may be pulled towards violent extremism.
What can I do to help?
There is no single profile of a person likely to be drawn into violent extremism. Experience has shown that there can be early warning signs most likely to be identified by concerned family, friends and professionals that indicate the need for support. The earlier that supportive intervention is provided, the more effective it is likely to be.
Let us know of any individuals you feel are susceptible to being drawn into violent extremist activity so that early, appropriate and effective support can be arranged. Likewise, tell us about individuals you know of who are promoting violent extremism.
