Advice for rideouts

Nationally, the police service does not support charity events on the road. In recent years, however, the popularity of large ride-outs for charitable purposes has increased and the police are often involved on grounds of road safety and traffic management.

In acknowledging this fact, our motorcycle unit has produced the advice below for the information of organisers and participants in these large events.

Policing large motorcycle rideouts in Devon and Cornwall

  • Police will control the speed of the convoy.
  • Police riders will usually station themselves within the convoy.
  • Police will not use blue lights unless trying to make ground or to warn other traffic.
  • Police will use sirens in an emergency. In this instance, stop to allow police riders to go past.

Advice to participants

  • Concentrate on your riding at all times.
  • Maintain a good safety margin between yourself and other bikes at all times.
  • Maintain your position within the convoy.
  • Do not undertake.
  • Comply with the Highway Code and road traffic law in relation to speed, white lines and traffic lights.
  • Marshalls should indicate the route only. They should not direct traffic and can have no priority over other road users.
  • Follow all directions given by the police. Look out for blue lights.
  • On dual carriageways, keep to the nearside lane and allow other traffic to enter and leave the dual carriageway.
  • Remember the importance of public perception towards motorcyclists – behave responsibly.
