Bogus workmen steal coin collection, Bideford

Elderly couple targeted

Detectives are seeking witnesses after bogus workmen tricked their way into the Bideford home of an elderly couple and stole a commemorative coin collection.

The two workmen called at the property in Moreton Park Road yesterday afternoon [Sunday 26 November] pretending to be checking on the water supply.

While the occupier was distracted by one offender, the other searched an upstairs bedroom.

It was later discovered that costume jewellery and the couple’s precious coin collection had been taken.

Among the collection were 50p, £5 and £20 coins depicting commemorative occasions such as the Olympics, the Queen on horseback, the Queen’s 90th birthday, Sir Winston Churchill, and the birth of Prince George and Princess Charlotte.

Police are investigating and urging anyone who may have seen the suspects in the area at the time to come forward.

The main offender is described as a white man, aged 40-55, about 5ft 5ins tall, and of pale complexion. He was wearing a flat cap and a blue raincoat, and spoke with an Irish accent.
