Police appeal after pensioner attacked

Police are appealing for witnesses of the robbery of an elderly man in Barnstaple town centre yesterday morning, Monday 14 September.

At around 11.45am, a male offender approached an elderly man in Cross Street and forcibly took his wallet, causing him to fall to the ground and sustain a severely broken hip.

Moments before the attack, the offender had been in the HSBC bank causing damage to a computer with a skateboard.

A 21-year-old man from Barnstaple has been arrested on suspicion of robbery and remains in police custody this morning.

Police are appealing for witnesses of both incidents. In particular, officers would like to hear from a member of the public who chased the suspect and retrieved the victim’s wallet, returning it to him.

Witnesses are asked to contact police on 101 or via email at quoting crime reference CR/077260/20.
