Storm Emma rescue

An off-duty officer from Bude rescued a woman found semi-conscious during Storm Emma on Friday 2 March 2018.

PC Jack Rickard, who has worked for the force for eight years, displayed meritorious conduct on Friday evening whilst walking to work at Bude police station.

Due to adverse weather that evening, PC Rickard decided to walk to work when he heard the faint cries of a woman in distress. He located the woman who was found curled up on Bude golf course after she had become disorientated whilst walking home.

She was found to be extremely cold and incoherent. PC Rickard noticed the woman was slipping into unconsciousness and picked her up and carried her towards an ambulance station. Her condition then deteriorated and she had become unresponsive.

The officer was then assisted by a member of the public who also helped to warm the female up whilst they got the woman to the paramedics.

PC Jack Rickard said: “I was supposed to be off that night as was not on duty, however, because of the weather, I decided to walk to Bude police station to report in and offer assistance.

“I was walking around the golf course when I heard the cries of the woman and offered my assistance. I did what any officer would have done in that situation.

“I am just happy that the woman was eventually allowed home and was safe and well.”

DCC Paul Netherton said: “The woman was later returned home and suffered no lasting effects, however, without the actions of Jack and the member of public this woman may well have ended up in a much more serious condition.

“This is yet another example of the professional police service that our officers delivered to our community throughout the horrendous conditions last week.”
