Statement following death of man in police custody, Torquay

Devon & Cornwall Police has referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) the death of a 35-year-old man who was being held in custody at Torquay Police Station.
The man was taken into police custody in the early hours of Wednesday 20 May. Later that afternoon he was found to be seriously unwell and paramedics were called. Unfortunately, despite efforts by officers and paramedics, he was declared deceased.
The Force is co-operating fully with an independent IOPC investigation.
