Man, 65, dies after car goes over cliff, Sidmouth

Formal identification has taken place of a man who died when his vehicle went off cliffs in Sidmouth on Wednesday morning [6 November].

Emergency services were called to Peak Hill Road at 9.25am after the car left the clifftop and landed on the beach.

A 65-year-old man from the Derby area was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The death is not being treated as suspicious and a file is being prepared for the coroner.

Police enquiries are continuing after a man died when his vehicle went off cliffs in Sidmouth yesterday morning [6 November].

Emergency services were called to Peak Hill Road at 9.25am after the car left the clifftop and landed on the beach.

A man was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Police enquiries are continuing to confirm the man’s identity and to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The death is not being treated as suspicious at this time.

Emergency services recovered the car from the beach yesterday evening. The beach has been reopened to the public.

Police, HM Coastguard teams and helicopter, ambulance, RNLI lifeboats and the fire service attended the incident yesterday.


Update: 4.15pm 06/11/19

The beach remains closed and is cordoned off from Jacobs Ladder beach huts.

A police guard remains in place around the vehicle.

Police enquiries are continuing to establish the man’s identity and the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The road closures in Peak Hill Road and Manor Road have been lifted.
