Firearms incident Axminster-update
One man has been released on police bail
At 10.15pm on Friday 23 August officers were deployed to an area of allotments in Axminster following reports of a firearm having been discharged.
Following enquiries, it was discovered that the windows of a nearby property in Lynch Close had been damaged, which are consistent with gunshots.
As a result of extensive investigations a 34-year-old man suspect was arrested by armed officers at an address in Dorset, in the early hours of Sunday 25 August on suspicion of attempted murder.
He has since been released on police bail until 20 September.
Supt Matt Lawler, Local Policing Commander for Exeter, East & Mid Devon said: “I would like to emphasize that no-one has been injured as a result of what is an isolated incident. We have been supporting the residents of the particular property who have been relocated since Friday evening, and there is no indication of a wider risk to the public.
"This remains a very complex and ongoing investigation, which is being led by local CID, with the support of the Force’s Major Crime Investigation Team.
"In the area of Lynch Close and the allotments local, residents will continue to see police activity during the rest of today and through the bank holiday weekend.
"That will include both physical searches, house to house enquires, and detailed forensic examinations, including by a ballistic expert who has been requested to attend.
"For operational reasons, we were unable to release further information yesterday given we were actively seeking a person in connection with this, and would therefore like to thank the press and public for their patience until we could provide this further update.
"I would sincerely like to thank local residents who have been so patient and supportive, and I would encourage residents to continue to approach and chat to officers in the area. The local neighbourhood team will continue to provide a visible presence so they are available for any questions, support and advice.”
Police have issued an appeal for any witnesses who were in the area of Lynch Close between 7-10:30pm on Friday 23 August.
