Freedom of Information (FOI) Act request ref: 01/FOI/23/5408
Version Date: 19/09/2023
The Performance & Analysis Department have provided the following information.
Data Processing:
Crimes recorded on crime information system - UNIFI
'No crimes' included
Qlikview Report: Property Report
Filtered by date: January 1st to November 14th 2022
PROP_Stolen_Flag: 1
Category Level 3: Mobile phone and Purse or Wallet
Data Limitations:
Figures vary between the number of crimes and the number of items, as each additional item stolen creates a duplicate property type.
In some instances, items are listed under one property type and not individual property types and will therefore not create a duplicate figure.
Devon & Cornwall Police transitioned to a new records management system on 14 November 2022 which has caused some delays and discrepancies in data availability.
Unfortunately, at the moment there is no property report that we can search on after the 14th of November which means we would have to manually review every burglary, theft and robbery offence since then to determine if a mobile phone / wallet was stolen.
This would mean answering the request would exceed the appropriate limit of 18 hours.
We are wondering if we can request data for the amount of mobile phone/wallet thefts (including reports that involve mobile card readers being used to steal money from cards) from 2022.
Between January 1st and November 14th 2022, there were 850 reported offences of mobile phone theft and 558 offence of purse or wallet theft.
A search for “card reader” and a search for “mobile card” produced a nil return on the Crime List
