Advancing opportunities for individuals with Neurodiversity continues as a priority focus for Devon & Cornwall Police. The force has over time seen an increasing demand from members of the workforce seeking access to Dyslexia and other Neurodiversity assessments. Introducing in year a simplified/condensed process to the screening assessment journey; individuals who are identified with Neurodiversity have been able to access the necessary support and reasonable adjustments that they need.
Facilitating and supporting individuals and their line managers through this process is a dedicated resource within the HR department. Additional support to individuals who are or believe they are Neurodiverse and wishing help through the assessment process and understand what reasonable adjustments may be possible is available from the Neurodiversity Support Network and their trained peer supporters.
In November 2020, the Positive Action team launched their first programme, available to all those from underrepresented groups, who are qualified to Sergeant rank. Of those who engaged with the support offered by the team and went on to sit their promotions board interview; 82.5 per cent achieved success as a result.
Following the success with the first programme, we listened to feedback and adapted the approach to launch a similar offering for those seeking to progress from Sergeant to Inspector.
During recent years the initiatives delivered within Devon & Cornwall Police to support women in police staff roles has helped us to achieve parity with female population across all police staff grades, we are incredibly proud to have delivered this. However, women still occupy the majority of roles in the lower grades, so it is important we continue to have a focus in this area.
