Matt Longman took up the role of Temporary Assistant Chief Constable for the Operations Department at the start of June 2024. It is a varied and interesting command which sees him leading the specialist uniform operations, including public order, roads policing, firearms, operations planning and resourcing. This can involve working at a National and Regional level, but above all the Operations Department will look to work closely with colleagues across Devon & Cornwall Constabulary to deliver the policing service that communities need.
He started his career in Hampshire Police, but in 2003 gravitated back to the West Country in pursuit of waves and sand. He considers himself lucky enough to have experienced the full spectrum of policing that includes Neighbourhood Policing, Intelligence, Major Crime, Partnership working, Public Order, Protest and Covert Ops. Prior to taking on his current role he was the Police Commander for Plymouth for over 3 years which included chairing the Community Safety Partnership and being a core member of the Violence Against Women and Girls Commission in 2022. He is currently the National Police Lead for Hunting with Hounds and holds an MSc in Police Leadership & Management.
Throughout his career Matt has been particularly interested in some key areas of policing which include the Policing of Protest, Public Order and the setting up of the Forces first public scrutiny panel that looks at use of police powers.
Outside of work, Matt enjoys coaching youth rugby in the winter and beaches in the summer with his family.
