Welcome to the Force’s Ethnicity Pay Gap Report 2023, we are proud to share with you our actions and activities that will help us build a more inclusive organisation.
During the last three years we have delivered an incredible amount of activity to help us move towards changing our workforce diversity and encourage and support more people from ethnically diverse heritage to commence their career in policing. The work we have already undertaken has helped Devon and Cornwall Police to increase the number of officer numbers from an ethnic background since the launch of our Positive Action Strategy in June 2019. I am very proud of this achievement and confident that we have robust plans in place to continue to make progress over the coming years.
In 2022 the National Police Race Action Plan was launched, and Devon and Cornwall Police are committed to delivering on all aspects and we are confident that this will have a positive impact on improving representation across all ranks and grades.
We know that trust in policing amongst Black and ethnically diverse communities is low and we accept that we need to work hard to build both trust and confidence within all the communities we serve. We acknowledge the impact this has on individual career choices, and we are keen to change this and encourage people from all ethnicities to consider a career in policing. We firmly believe there are great opportunities in our organisation and understand the huge benefits to everyone of having a workforce that is reflective of the communities we serve.
Whilst is it positive that our data shows we do not have an ethnicity pay gap we know we have low representation across all ranks and grades, but more obviously in senior posts.
With the support of teams working collectively across the force including our Altogether Different Staff Network and our Race Action Plan, Equality Diversity and Inclusion Strategy and Positive Action Team I have the confidence that we have robust plans in place to deliver an inclusive workplace where people from ethnic heritage feel valued and inspired to achieve their career aspirations.
