The Zero Tolerance to Hate Crime Pledge

Hate crime can harm the very core of someone’s identity, and whilst this may often be committed through ignorance it can also be associated with inherent hostility and prejudice. "The defining characteristic of a hate crime is not actually hate. It's prejudice. We use the word hate to define itbecause the prejudice is born of a hateful climate." George the Poet on hate crime, for the Equality and Human Rights Commission. Lets be a strong inclusive community and create a climate free from prejudice. Sign the pledge to send a clear message - we have Zero Tolerance to Hate Crime.

About the Zero Tolerance Campaign

Devon & Cornwall Police take all hate crime seriously. With feelings of disharmony and unrest amongst minority communities following the Brexit referendum we wanted to take positive and proactive steps to address this. Working closely with representatives from across our communities, ideas were collated, concerns were listened to, and feedback was taken on board. We launched the Zero Tolerance to Hate Crime campaign during Hate Crime Awareness Week in October 2016.

Hate Crime Awarenes Videos

Hate Crime Awareness Week runs from 12-19 October. Devon and Cornwall Police is staging a week of action, events and activities to raise awareness of hate crime and encourage communities to report it. The force is aiming to raise awareness of what hate crime is, stand by those affected by it, and encourage people to report any incidents.  It is also encouraging businesses and organisations to sign its Zero Tolerance to Hate Crime pledge. A hate crime is any criminal offence which is perceived by the victim or any other person to be motivated by hostility or prejudice because of a certain characteristic. This can be a person’s race, religion/belief, sexual orientation, disability, or because they are transgender. Police in Devon and Cornwall also record and monitor hate incidents/crimes based on sex or gender.
