In January 2005 a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was drawn up between the Association of Chief Police Officers and the Association of British Insurers to deal with requests for information regarding insurance claims.
The MOU explains the process for how Insurers and Loss Adjusters can obtain information from the Police Service and states that:
Where requests are made they must be in the agreed format (Appendix D (a) and D (b))
The Appendix D (a) Provides information that a crime or lost property has been reported to the police. There is a fee for £30.60 for these requests and police forces will endeavour to respond in 20 working days.
The Appendix D (b) is for a criminal report and police log and will incur a fee of £129.80. Police forces will endeavour to reply in 30 working days.

In all cases the consent of the insured is required.
