Like other public bodies, Devon & Cornwall Police must meet the requirements of the Public Sector Equality Duty. These are our second set of equality objectives. As with our first set, they are grouped under four broad strategic themes which relate to the service that we provide to the public and our employment practice and ways of working, the themes are;
- Hate crime
- Violence against women and children
- Access and engagement
- Leadership and positive action
Developing our equality objectives
Guidance from the Equality & Human Rights Commission recommends that equality objectives support the delivery of an organisation’s business plan and priorities. This ensures that normal business activity drives progress on the equality objectives and embeds equality into day to day business in line with the principle underpinning the general duty.
We took this approach when we developed our first set of objectives and we developed our equality objectives for 2016 – 2019 through a process of review and assessment of a range of information including existing business plans and priorities, progress on our current equality objectives, our own equality data and new and emerging issues. We used a workshop format to engage key internal and external stakeholder and identify key priorities under the each of four main themes. These draft objectives were then discussed with our strategic alliance partner, Dorset Police, in order to ensure that our priorities are aligned as we develop our working partnership. We agreed a set of shared equality objectives which reflect our shared priorities and the different position of each organisation and include joint priorities as well as individual areas of work.
Consultation on the draft equality objectives was carried out between November 2015 and January 2016, with feedback provided from a range of internal and external stakeholders. The final version was signed off by the Executive Board on 23rd February 2016. Activity against each of our equality objectives is monitored through our Thematic Reference Groups and Equality, Diversity and Human Rights Strategic Group. Progress on our equality objectives is published annually as part of our Annual Equality Report.
