Freedom of Information (FOI) Act request ref: 01/FOI/25/008947/P
Version Date: 07/11/2025
Gloucestershire police ay their Gloucester Detention Centre insist that all arrested detainees must wear a grey top before they are photographed in custody so that 'we all look the same'. Under the FOI Act I would like to know your rules/protocol in regard to this. Is a detainee required to wear certain clothes before they are photographed. ?
The Criminal Justice Department has provided the following information:
It is not policy that arrested detainees are photographed in their custody tops for custody. We take photos of detainees in their own clothes. These images can then be used in ID procedures if required in the future. Taking photos in custody greys would not give this option as it would make the individual identifiable as having been in custody and this could be detrimental to the identification process.
